How to get the most out of an autumn sailing trip to Athens

Updated: Feb 25

What can possibly be said about Athens that hasn’t been said already?

The Greek capital is nothing less than a living masterpiece, with a golden architectural inheritance gained over 3,400 years of recorded history.

But when we say ‘living’, we do mean living, as the Attica area also offers an abundance of world-class shopping opportunities, irresistible tavernas, fascinating museums and almost everything else that anyone could conceivably desire when they book a sailing holiday in Greece.

So, what is it about Athens in the cooler Autumn months that makes it such a deserved massive draw for yacht charter novices and experienced enthusiasts alike?

The perfect balance between affordability and fabulous weather

Athens is still delightfully warm during the autumn, with the downtown area of the city reaching average highs of about 29.7 degrees Celsius in September and 24.1 degrees Celsius in October.

Book your sailing holiday in Greece for the coming weeks, and you can expect strong sunshine, decent winds and warm water temperatures. However, crucially, charter prices are also very reasonable at this time of year.

Athens offers some brilliant stopping-off points

As those of you who read our other recent blog post on five of the less obvious attractions not to miss on an Athens yacht holiday will know, the city itself has a lot to offer to those wishing to take the initiative and discover all manner of hidden gems.

However, let’s be honest – if you’ve decided to book a sailing holiday in Greece, the likelihood is that you will wish to spend at least some of your vacation time exploring spots slightly further afield.

It’s fortunate, then, that this part of the country offers such fine ports not far from Athens, such as Poros, with its neoclassical edifices and superb beaches, and Spetses, which is such an old and traditional stop-off that you won’t even see any private cars in the town limits. Instead, people here tend to get around by walking, horse-drawn carriages, bicycles, motorbikes and mopeds.

Or what about Aegina, which offers such historic attractions as the Monastery of Agios Nectarios and the Temple of Aphaea, the latter a favourite of Romantic artist J.M.W. Turner?

Secure your passage to Athens this autumn

Athens is far from a ‘ghost town’ at this time of year. Indeed, it continues to be as lively as ever, including in the restaurants, where you can enjoy gorgeous seafood and a form of Greek fast food known as a souvlaki, which consists of small meat and vegetable pieces grilled on a skewer.

Almost everything that makes Athens such a timeless hotspot for holidaymakers remains present and correct throughout the autumn – so why not make it the focal point of your own next sailing holiday in Greece, whether it’ll be your first visit, your fifth or your fiftieth?
